Growing up in a narcissistic family structure can be similar to living in a haunted house. One can sense that something’s incorrectly but never observe reality from the shadows. Kids growing up with narcissism feel an underlying sense of anger and fate all of the time. They learn not to call attention to their fears however, because asking such questions is viewed as the same as condemning, and a narcissistic parent should never feel that they are being blamed. The unspoken arrangement of rules brought down from on high by a narcissistic parent or parents (some narcissists just fall in adoration with different narcissists) may never be seen totally by the children growing up with them. Still, kids learn to comply with those principles precisely. Children enduring a narcissistic family unit speak of serious, untapped anger and abandonment, profound established pain, and a sense of betrayal, but they can’t point their finger at the cause of any of these feelings. They simply realize that they’ve always had them. Many times, they even blame themselves for them, and for not being sufficient or deserving of regard or love.
Children of narcissists have to conceal from the remainder of the world, even perhaps their dearest companions or more distant family individuals. The insider facts they may have to keep are that they are not genuinely cared for emotionally and that conceivably, they are being abused in some way. Children may also be taken care of the lethal conviction that they and the remainder of the family are better than every other person—superior to the neighbors, superior to their companions’ families, superior to different kids at school, preferably significantly over the remainder of the more distant family. At the same time, these children may be getting the spoken (or unspoken) message that they are sufficiently bad, not physically pretty or handsome enough, not smart enough, not capable enough, because to a narcissist, children are both rivalry and servants to the narcissist.
In a narcissistic family, the parents couldn’t care less for the kids, the kids care for the parents by being commanded to show unwavering help, unlimited displays of adoration and affection, and potentially even errands around the house above and past what a normal kid ought to be asked to do, since doing menial tasks may take away from the time the narcissist has to seek after their own goals. This results in the children also having a higher likelihood of developing disorders like depression and anxiety. It is very common that they may find treatment for themselves later on in life to fix their relationship issues or emotional symptoms. However, they usually lack awareness of the deeper cause of their mental disorders. A family with one or more narcissistic parents are always hiding a profound pain. These families operate in the way of unspoken rules. The children learn to follow those rules but they never truly understand them and are always pained by them.
